Alan C. Tan '09

Chairman of the Board

SK Operating LLC

Alan C. Tan is currently the Chairman of the Board of SK Operating LLC and Managing Member of Deng IP Holder LLC, which are the companies that develops products based on and licenses the rights respectively to his patented inventions, the SecurKart™ family of products which extend data intensive technologies to rural and areas where reliable, high speed internet is not physically possible.

In addition to his day job, Alan is also the appointed Co-Chairman of the State of Connecticut’s Commission on Women, Children, Seniors, Equity, and Opportunity. Commissioner Tan was part of the team which reformed the former advisory commission model to a unique state agency which serves as the Connecticut General Assembly’s nonpartisan chief advisor on issues affecting the historically underrepresented populations of the State of Connecticut.

Before his current roles, Alan was formerly the President and Chief Executive Officer of a standards organization geared towards trust and accountability in the startup and small business ecosystem. It was also one of the first benefit corporations ever formed in Connecticut and he was also one of the advocates for the Connecticut Benefit Corporation Act that passed in 2014, and the winner of multiple global “Best for the World” awards in governance. Alan also has a successful track record of scaling companies. He scaled a startup from no revenue to millions of dollars a year in annual revenue in 18 months. Although some of his initiatives and companies failed, he strongly believes that failure is just lessons to teach for future success in other ventures.

Alan strongly believes in the value of community, and his trademark phrase is “Together we thrive, and divided we fall”. Although he faced many negative life experiences, he believes in the good of people, and works diligently to build a stronger community in everything he does. He may not be always successful but he believes his track record speaks for itself. It is for that reason that he continues mentoring the next generation of leaders, as he believes that everyone can leave this place a little better than they found it.

Alan is a 2009 graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Business with a degree in Management and a concentration of Entrepreneurship. He is a resident of Rocky Hill, Connecticut, where he was born, raised, and still resides. He is currently married to his wife Diana with no children.

“Mentoring is important not just to me, but to many others, because it is a way for us to create and cultivate a stronger community.”
